Breakdown -

Caribbean Coast - Flat all week with a very small chance of a tropical wave pushing in knee high surf by the weekend.

Pacific Coast - The week starts with small surf, chest at best up north and a foot bigger down south at the south facing breaks. More south swell arrives at daylight Wednesday with a 16 second period, pushing waves 1-2 feet overhead for the next three days. However, the coast from Nosara north will be smaller due to the angle. By Saturday the swell fades to head high, and Sunday through next Tuesday look minimal.

The Long Shot - A strong Southwest swell will show up a week from Wednesday, August 27th. Waves will be 1-2 feet overhead and has a better angle for the north Nicoya Peninsula. Nothing showing after that.

** From Louis at Hotel Las Tortugas in Playa Grande (8/17) -

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas y condiciones: In spite of the dismall predictions for surf here in Playa Grande, the swell has hovered around head high all week and has produced good surf when the wind cooperated, especially at the beginning of the week.

WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este fin de semana (clima y olas): The high tides are in afternoon and as we move into our pre-rainy season, the chances for off shores are diminishing. The small swell has nice shape and only needs wind. Our perfect, classic, conditions are becoming rarer as the thunder storms move in.

** From Rafael at Witchs Rock Surf Camp in Tamarindo - (8/16)

Today the conditions were small waves, choppy and onshore wind, better for the longboards because the wave is really slow with not too much power, but a nice day for tanning on the beach. Size 2-3 feet.

** From photographer John Lyman, Lyman Photos in Playa Negra - (8/16)

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas y condiciones: Playa Negra has been missing this past swell. Way too south for here. We have small waves at waist to chest high and kinda mushy. Partly cloudy skies with rain some afternoons. Water temp is 83 degrees. Coming up we have more of the same too south swells running back to back through the middle of this upcoming week. Look for some bigger sets at the south facing spots like Pavones or Playa Hermosa near Jaco. For our area there won't be much to surf on but the diving and snorkeling will be great.

** From Eric at SurfingNosara.com in Playa Guiones (8/16) -

We'll we had a big storm real early this morning, but now have clear skies again. I shot the photos about an hour or so ago and it has gotten nicers since then... not sure about the surf, as it may have been the worst I have ever seen it here.. small and kind of choppy... but folks were still getting some rides. This should be the bottom as it looks like another South is headed our way. Weather has been nice, and conditions good for this time of the year... everyone is about to clear out of town and the surf will start firing in the next week... here's hopin'

** From Steve at Jazzys River House in Dominical (8/16) -

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas y condiciones: longboardville in Dominical these days. small, clean, shapely, spunky and fun. occasional head high set waves at higher tides - pretty juicy and hollow at low.

WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este fin de semana (clima y olas): more of the same, small, clean and fun. till the next swell arrives, relax everybody.

BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a surfear este fin de semana en su area: mellow dominical, who needs to travel. forget the point.

** From Brice at Land Assurance in Dominical (8/18) -

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas y condiciones: This size is now back up after a few days of knee high slop. I didn't make it out this morning, but it looks like a new swell is coming. Amongst relatively flat conditions, sets arrive about every five or ten minutes with waves well over-head. They looked fast...near closed...but again, I wasn't out.

WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este fin de semana (clima y olas): It is very difficult to tell from the swell maps because there are so many small events stacked on top of one another. My guess is that the coming week should be filled with peaky conditions mostly overhead.

BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a surfear este fin de semana en su area: The tide is right for two sessions per day at the beach. The current seems to be pushing north, so entering the water in front of the cell tower makes sense.
