Playa Hermosa, Costa Rica – by Ellen Zoe - There was a most unexpected result today at the Gran Finals of the Circuito Nacional de Surf DayStar Quiksilver at La Curva in Playa Hermosa. In Round 2 of the Open category the favorite to the title, Jason Torres of Jaco fell into the hands of Junior Danny Bishko (Esterillos), who in the last minutes sparkled with a wave of 7 points outscoring Torres. In front of 500 people on Day 1 of the 7th and last date of the Circuito Nacional DayStar Quiksilver, the tension arrived in Round 2 of the Open, when the eight surfers who are up for the Title entered the water knowing they all had to be in the quarter finals to approach the Championship on Sunday.

 

Neverthless, the bad luck and the excess of confidence played against Torres, as he had the fastest fall in this Circuito date watching Bishko earn 10.36 points, Diego Naranjo (Jaco) get 9.97 and the second place for the pass. Torres was 3rd with 9.20 and Pablo Espinoza was 4th with 6.70. Jason tried valiantly to vindicate himself in the heat once he witness the wave that pushed Bishko to the top—a great left where he used each section almost all the way to the sand—but it was not to be.

 

At this date, Torres takes 17th place, after having obtained 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place in the season at Nosara, Tamarindo and Parrita, respectively.

 

For Luis Vindas of Jaco, however, the highest ranked contender for the National Title, today he was secure in his game. He earned a combination 8.90 next to Junior Maykol Torres (Esterillos), which classified Vindas for the quarterfinals. Vindas needs to place at least 5th in the Gran Finals and that corresponds to a 3rd place in the semifinals.

 

Behind him, those hungry for the Title include Gilbert Brown (Puerto Viejo) and Jair Pérez (Jaco), who like Vindas arrived in the quarterfinals with the hope that they will see the fall of the leader of the Circuito, opening a spot for themselves at the top.

 

The Open category today brought special guests to the Gran Finals. Federico Pilurzu of Tamarindo, 2-time Central American Surfing Champion, who ran a single date this season, reappeared with his excellent surfing and competed. The South African Champion, ASP Junior, Brandon Roberts, also entered the competition. The foreigner, with his advanced level, put up the highest combination of the day with 12.66 in Round 1.

 

These two will be in the same heat with Jair Pérez, who is now the nearest in ranking points to Luis Vindas. Bishko completes the list in the quarter final.

The Women’s and Junior categories went off today without many surprises. Lisbeth Vindas and Nataly Bernold (both of Jaco), arrived today at the semifinals like the leaders they are in their series. Both respectively ran at a level superior to their opposites while putting in the highest combinations with 8.33 and 9.67.

 

Limon’s Jordan Hernandez, Malpais’ Anthony Fillingim, Muñoz and Maykol Torres continued on in Junior and have until Sunday to let it be known who will take the Title in this division.

 

Today La Curva in Playa Hermosa had waves of 3 meters in the most critical part of the beach, with great reforms in the last section of the wave. Sunday, however, is expected to be even better conditions for the morning. The climate brought intermittent rain and low intensity throughout the day.

 

Tomorrow the action starts at 8:30 a.m. with the first part of the Finals for the Circuito Metropolitano, the semifinal of the Tag Team game—which will award $900 to the winning team Sunday—plus the categories that did not see action today.

Inesperado: Jason Torres resbaló y queda fuera de la lucha al Título

Entró al agua la Gran Final del Circuito Nacional en Playa Hermosa de Jacó con el resultado más inesperado de todos, en Ronda 2 de la categoría Open el favorito al título, Jason Torres, cayó en manos del Junior Danny Bishko, que brilló con una ola de 7 puntos en el último minuto de un heat que tuvo clasificando a Torres desde el inicio.

Ante unas 500 personas que se dieron cita hoy para vivir el día 1 de la sétima y última fecha del Circuito DayStar, la tensión llegó en Ronda 2 Open cuando los ocho surfistas que están para el título, lo dejaron todo el agua para estar en los cuartos de final y acercarse al Campeonato que se definirá el próximo domingo.

Sin embargo, la mala suerte y el exceso de confianza le jugaron en contra a Torres que vio su caída más rápida en participaciones del Circuito Nacional, debido primero, al inspirado Bishko que ganó la serie con 10.36, segundo Diego Naranjo (9,97), Torres tercero con 9.20 y Pablo Espinoza cuarto  (6.70).

Jason intentó reivindicar su puntaje una vez que fue testigo de la buena izquierda que Bishko aprovechó en cada sección, principalmente la última movida al final de esa ola -casi en la arena- que conectó radical y con éxito; y Torres que se pudo venir en lo primero que se encontró, no logró hallar una pared en esa ola para conectar y sacar los puntos que lo hubiesen mandado al segundo lugar.

Torres logra así el lugar 17 de la fecha, después de haber conseguido un 1º, un 2º y un 3º lugar en la temporada en Nosara, Tamarindo y Parrita respectivamente.

Por su parte, el primer contendiente en esta Final, Luis Vindas, hoy fue seguro en su juego y se clasificó a los cuartos de final con una mediana combinación de 8.90 al lado del Junior Maykol Torres que llegó a 7.23, con lo que el de Jacó está a una serie de conseguir su primer Título; no obstante, necesita llegar al quinto lugar de la Fecha, que corresponde a un tercer lugar de la semifinal.

Detrás suyo, lo siguen hambrientos de Título, Gilbert Brown, Carlos Muñoz y Jair Pérez, quienes al igual que Vindas, hoy llegaron a cuartos de final con la esperanza de ver caer al líder del Circuito para buscar el Campeonato en la final del evento.

La categoría Open trajo invitados especiales pero de mucho cuidado a esta Gran Final. Federico Pilurzu quien corrió una sola fecha en la temporada reapareció con su mejor surfing y sigue en la competencia, y el sudafricano Campeón del Mundo ASP Junior, Brandon Roberts, vino al país y entró a la competencia. El extranjero con un dotado nivel, puso la combinación más alta del día con 12.66 en Ronda 1.

Mañana estos dos estarán en el mismo heat que Jair Pérez, que ahora es el más cercano en puntos a Luis Vindas. El verdugo Danny Bishko, completa la lista en ese cuarto de final.

Por otro lado, las categorías Junior y Open Femenino se mantienen sin sorpresas, Lisbeth Vindas y Nataly Bernold hoy llegaron a semifinales como líderes en sus series. Ambas enseñaron un nivel superior a sus contrarias al meter las combinaciones más altas con 8.33 y 9.67 respectivamente.

Jordan Hernández, Anthony Fillingim, Carlos Muñoz y Maykol Torres en Junior continúan y hasta el domingo se sabrá para quién será el título en esta división.

Hoy Playa Hermosa regaló olas de 3 metros en la parte más crítica del set, con favorables reformas en la última sección de la ola; sin embargo, se espera aun mejores condiciones para mañana y el domingo. El clima trajo lluvias intermitentes de baja intensidad a lo largo del día.

Mañana la acción arranca a las 8:30 a.m. con la primera parte de la final del Circuito Metropolitano, semifinales del juego Tag Team que entregará 900 dólares  al equipo ganador el domingo, más las categorías que no vieron acción hoy.
