Central America and Mainland Mexico Short-Range Surf Forecast (below published on 6/22):

SOLID SURF THROUGH THE START OF THE WEEKEND, MORE SSW ON THE WAY NEXT WEEK

We’re in the midst of another solid run of SSW-SW (200-215) swell right now, with the final and largest pulse expected to show up on Wednesday.  Wave heights are expected to be pick up along the exposed coast through Thursday, and peak Friday holding some size through the weekend.  After that, the models are showing a couple of “reinforcing” swells from the SSW (200-215) showing up early next week.  I’ll explain the quote marks in the long-range.

Very similar to last weeks swell, this new run of SSW-SW (200-215) has been slowly building with a couple of inconsistent arrivals earlier this week, combining to bring some head high to well overhead surf through midweek.  More energy is due to arrive late Wednesday/early Thursday though, which is going to ramp things up a bit more over the next couple of days.  The blend of energy in the water should peak with around 5 to 9 feet at 17 to 20 seconds late Thursday and Friday.  That means large-solid surf, with the more average breaks along the exposed coast seeing head high to well overhead surf.  Standouts during the peak should be a little bigger with wave heights in the range of a couple feet overhead to double overhead+.  Of course a few deepwater spots and swell magnets that can focus the swell energy back on itself like Puerto, could be looking at set waves going triple overhead or bigger.

Again, very similar to the last swell, so Western Panama and most of Costa Rica are going to be dealing with a bit of shadowing.  That doesn’t mean there wont be surf, it’s just not going to be pumping nearly as hard as those areas not affected by the islands.  Set waves may also be a bit more inconsistent.  Size will back off a little quicker it looks like on this one, dropping to more moderate size over the weekend into early next week.  Next week though, we’re looking at more SSW showing up to keep surfable waves in the water, in fact they could be pretty good based on some new evidence that just came to light.

Great waves in Tamarindo, sand bars in front and around the river mouth has been pounding 4-5ft solid faces, double sessions is the cherry on top of the pie, only the crowd that have the endurance to paddle out, challengers of the strong currents hang out and get the good rides; weather is rewarding with rain and over cast sky.

Langosta, Avellanas and Negra are epic point breaks to catch big rides within the low tides.
