Central America and Mainland Mexico Short-Range Surf Forecast (Report Date: 2/13/2017)

SOLID COMBO SWELL THIS WEEK

We should be seeing some fun combo swell this week, with new NW (295-305+) working its way down the coast and interacting with a new SSW (195-205) that should be arriving Tuesday. The mix of swell should come to a peak Wednesday/Thursday before easing steadily through the upcoming weekend. Another NW (295-305+) swell is due to make its way down through Mainland Mexico over the weekend as well, reaching Central America early next week.

WNW-NW (295-310) swell should start working its way into Central America more on Tuesday bringing around 2-3 feet of deepwater swell to the exposed coast with periods around 14 seconds. That should be enough to generate at least some waist to chest high+ waves, with potential for bigger sets.

That will coincide with new SSW (190-205) swell also arriving Tuesday. Forerunners are expected to arrive around 19 to 20 seconds, and the swell will then build to around a 4 foot peak late Wednesday/Thursday with 17 second periods. That means surf will likely build into the waist to head high+ range over the next 24 hours, with some magnets and standouts seeing overhead-overhead+ sets. Wednesday more consistency chest to overhead+, with some sets going well overhead. Thursday during the peak standouts could be running head high to well overhead+. The addition of the NW swell in the water could mean bigger peaky sets along the more westerly exposed beaches where the NPac energy can work its way in. Southerly exposures are expected to hold size through Friday, before backing off steadily Saturday and Sunday, with wave heights settling into the waist to head high range.

Tropical Outlook

No tropical cyclones at this time.

Double surf session week in Tamarindo, AM and PM tides let us work in office hours or for the kids let them go to school after surfing. Waves 2-3ft within the best sets, warm water and no wind at least in the morning, after 12 wind comes from South for few hours then gets back to clean waves.
Pico Grande is the best break away from the beginners and schools, nice peaks and fun cuts on the right break, not too crowded, probably cuz there are waves all over the Pacific and Caribbean as well.

"Old men" spot remains a great spot for schools to hang out, 1-2ft in crystal clear waters.

Dominical

Costa Rica Surf Camp

- 2/16

Good sized swell all week with overhead peaks.

Dominical was best on Tuesday but with the fast waves and height the best place to surf this week was at La Punta. Larger swells cleared out the crowd and conditions were best in the morning. It was a little choppy this morning but conditions should improve this weekend.

Dominical

Jazzys River House - Dominical

Steve Fergus at Jazzys River House

- 2/16

This current swell is persistent, especially for this time of year, and it hasn't offered much in Dominical. Well overhead and armored car tough and largely closed out. Just right for beginning surf students. Occasionally at various tides there have been improved conditions with some 4 star windows of makeable waves including some low tide barrel sessions.

Some point activity with this swell but not consistent. Some fun overhead sessions at higher tides. Dominicalito has had more size, shape and consistency than usual.

Hotel Roca Verde is the nightlife center with thursday evenings belonging to the G-String Cowboys and their nice biend of covers and originals and Friday nights we find Ben Jammin' and the Howlers with Nancy Buchan and her electric fiddle serving up their offering of oldies and originals to go along with the best pizza around and other tasty dinner dishes. Come enjoy the lively festivities and bring you dancing shoes.

Check www.jazzysriverhouse.com for their menu of offerings such as Ruby's Palm Part Art classes and be sure to stop by and browse her fine art & craft studio/gallery. Also check with Steve if you're looking for surf lessons or surfboard sales and rentals or ask about Steve's East/West massage therapy or a private yoga session.
