Central America and Mainland Mexico Short-Range Surf Forecast (below published on 5/17):

SSW HOLDS THROUGH THURSDAY AND THEN BACKS OFF FOR SMALLER SURF NEXT WEEK

The run of SSW (205-215) continues for a few more days with new energy arriving today to help maintain if not boost wave heights a little bit over the next couple of days. Wave heights will start to relax on Friday and continue to ease through the middle of next week. There’s a little bit of SW (215-220) on the way for early next week to help maintain surfable waves. Looks like smaller surf through the end of next week, but could see another S-SSW arriving by the end of the month.

The SSW (205-215) currently in the water is bringing head high to overhead+ surf to standouts today. A few bigger set waves in the range of a couple feet overhead to several feet overhead are possible at magnets. Size will ease a little bit this afternoon, but not much, because the next pulse should be filling in with 18-second forerunners by this evening.

A little weaker than the previous swell, this one should still build to a 4 to 6 foot peak with 15-16 second periods late Wednesday/Thursday. So wave heights will build back into the chest to overhead range along the exposed coast, with standouts seeing set waves going overhead to several feet overhead. A few deepwater breaks could see bigger set waves going double overhead or even a little bigger at the top magnets in the region. Wave heights start to ease slowly Friday, backing off more over the weekend. Next week is supposed to start off a bit smaller. There will be a small background pulse SW (215-220) arriving late Sunday building to a 2-3 foot peak Monday helping maintain waist to head high surf at standouts through early next week.

- Unreal waves this past week(s) nonstop overhead action and the Pacific just keeps on cranking! Looks like it is going to drop down to head high this weekend (boo hoo), next week it will be back to our normal overhead splendor.

Been plenty of on shores and rain this past week. The early bird gets the barrels.

Check out Salvemonos.org. Buy a souvenir T, sticker or mug at Luna Llena hotel or Azul Profundo Boutique. All proceeds go directly to our beloved monkeys. Thanks and be safe!

The surfing high tides are in the afternoon now and the wind has been mostly light on-shore. With the little bit of rain we are enjoying, there have been some surprising glass offs and decent surf in the head high range which is perfect size for our beach break.

The weekend crowd was uncharacteristically thick for this time of the year.

We are hoping for more rain to save our plants from the drought and expect some Florida style afternoon sessions this following week.

Please keep Costa Rica's turtles in mind when you plan your visit to this area. We do our best to protect them, but we need your support too. Together we can keep them safe. Thank you.

Tamarindo

Seafari Costa Rica

Alejandro at Seafari Costa Rica

- 5/18

Tamarindo has good waves for beginners 1-2ft, incoming tides offer fast a hollow small ride for the kids that are surfing before going to School, then within the high tide the waves get better up to 3ft in the best sets, crowd is now a days something normal in Tamarindo, therefore use your skills and experience to avoid being hit by a beginner's board or to drop on some one and perhaps both getting hurt very bad.

If you have more experience and ride better waves, the options near by are La Casita, just across the river in Playa Grande or walk South to Langosta beach, the second place has some rocks in the bottom that you must to be aware on to how to dive in case of a wipe out. Both spots are working great with this swell, 3-4ft in the best sets, not so crowded and wind is very consistent along the week.

Join us next time at the Drangon Fly Restaurant for live entertainment. Our Tequila Mockingbird cocktail is one fiery drink and would certainly pair well while enjoying the incredible performances by local talent!

Contact us if planing to visit Tamarindo and "try out surfing" the 2 hour surf lesson that introduces you into the basic points of surfing, we also offer surf programs for the people who are committed to learn the sport, with professional and ISA certified instructors.

The waves this week have been normal at low tide and quite large when the tide begins to fill, windy weather in the afternoon due to weather conditions, sunny mornings and cloudy afternoons.. beach isn't crowded at this time of the year.

The best place for surfing is definitely Dominicalito.

We've picked up some size - well overhead yesterday and today with some windows of good conditions. Some good sized barrels got made at lower tides yesterday and higher tide sessions have been inconsistent because of our stormy weather.

Dominical the best local spot as usual but both Hermosa South and Dominicalito have had some great sessions and even the point has had a few short windows of clean fun surf.

Hotel Roca Verde continues with it's expanded lineup of live music. Ruby's piano lounge starts around 7pm on Wednesdays, the G-String Cowboys offer their country flavor to the mix on Thursday night while Ben Jammin' and the Howlers featuring Nancy Buchan on electric fiddle light up the Friday night spot. Great food and great music so come join the fun.

Check our website for low season specials including Ruby's 'Plant Part Art' classes. Pop in to visit her studio/gallery and see what's new. Also check with Steve for East/West massage therapy, yoga and surf instruction and surfboard sales and rentals.
